It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer. – Albert Einstein

People with a growth mindset believe in hard work and second chances, third chances, and so on. Because giving up is never an option.

People with a fixed mindset only tend to see possibilities within their limited capabilities. Once they get something wrong they mostly think ‘that is it, I can’t do it, this not for me.’ Sometimes they even avoid trying because of fear of failure.

People typically have both a growth mindset and a fixed mindset, but some have more or use more of one than the other. You may have a growth mindset in one area and fixed mindset in a different area. This mindset phenomenon is a spectrum.

Triggers We Should Pay Attention To

What triggers a fixed mindset?
What happens when someone is better than you in what you are good at?

Words are compelling and what we say to ourselves or to others about ourselves can be triggering. That is why we need to be aware of our words.

According to Dr. Dweck, when you call a person smart than you you put them in a box. And that could narrow their world into living in a fixed mindset

Natural Growth Mindset

Those who have a natural growth mindset do better. They love learning and challenges according to findings from research she and her colleagues conducted.

Company Hiring Patterns

Some companies believe in fixed talents and worship them and would pay any amount to get them. But the problem becomes there is no growth over time.

That is why other companies who believe in growth and empowerment believe that everyone has unique potential would seldom hire those with a fixed mindset even if they are the best at what they do.

Characteristics, Benefits, and How To Increase A Growth Mindset

– Rearrange and recognize your talents and skills
– Readiness to learn
– Readiness to share credit
– Skills and abilities are malleable
– Creating denser neurons
– Growth mindset- people working and collaborating with each other

Fixed Mindset

Cheating, desire to cheat and deception are much more prevalent in the fixed mindset because they do not believe that they can actually improve their skills, talents, etc. In other words, they do not readily tap into their invisible potentials.

The Growth Mindset Values

– Growth and contribution
– Good team player
– The power of yet (for example, a kid with a growth mindset got a C she/he will not see it as a failure or terms himself/herself as a failure. Instead, they just see it as not yet – not yet there, but there is a chance for me to get there if I keep working hard and not giving up). ‘Not yet’ indicates there is still a chance to improve on performance.
