Physical Wellness has many aspects, but today we will concentrate on fitness. It is already hard to maintain a fitness lifestyle without a pandemic. During quarantine, many must work out at home. Technology makes virtual fitness classes possible, making video workouts more popular. It is also important to pay attention to what our bodies do and do not need in terms of rest, activity, food, alcohol, drugs, and tobacco.

Benefits of Regular Physical Activity

When a person is regularly physically active that person may enjoy:

  • Reduced risk of heart problems
  • Maintain individualized ideal body weight
  • Reduced risk of high blood pressure 
  • Improved balance and posture
  • Reduced risk osteoporosis: Stronger bones, muscles, and joints
  • Lower risk of cancers and type 2 diabetes
  • Improved moods, rest, and energy levels
  • Faster recovery after sickness or hospitalization
  • Lower cholesterol

Gain or Maintain A Healthier Mental State

Research suggests regular exercise improves emotional or mental health. Exercise helps fight or reduce depressive symptoms.

  • Exercise can improve brain chemistry through secretion of serotonin, and endorphins
  • Exercise can reduce stress hormones and improve sleep patterns
  • Exercise can improve social life by increasing social contact online or in the gym
  • Exercise can inhibit negative thoughts

Fitness Blender is a fitness website and channel run by experienced fitness trainers Kelli and Daniel. Their free online workout classes on YouTube do not require equipment. Workouts areas include fat-burning, kickboxing, metabolism-boosting, stretching sequences, total body strength training, etc.

Sweaty Betty offers free and easy online workouts you can do from the comfort of home no matter your level of fitness. Workouts include yoga, HIIT routines, and many more.

Turbulence Training is a free resource for body-weight training. All you need is time, internet access, and a laptop/smartphone. Created to keep your attention as you burn fat and get lean with workout videos 10 minutes or under.

Yoga With Me is a great resource for free yoga exercise at the convenience of your home. The team from Yoga With Me took upon themselves to elevate one of the world’s most popular exercise programs by filming most of their videos outdoors in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. There are two levels, and you can choose what part of the body to emphasize.

Spark people provides short videos with no equipment needed and offers tips on healthy cooking and eating habits to keep you in your ideal shape while not sacrificing your taste buds. These time conscious workout videos include Abs, Cardio, Yoga, and Pilates.

Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.

Physical wellness and exercise can be achieved in different ways. I still go for walks and runs and I am glad to be able to do that even during quarantine. Stay safe as you work to maintain your physical wellness and remember to focus on your health and state of mind and not your weight or waistline.
