Let us run with patience the race that is set before us” Hebrew 12:1
Joe and his brother Joel live in a small village called Tujer. After school, they help the family grow crops on their farmland to sell at the village market. They were well known for fresh nutritious tomatoes.
Joe was a patient, well-mannered boy loved by the villagers, who often sang this song when they saw Joe walking with a basket of fresh tomatoes on his shoulder:
“Here comes the hero, with a smile like sunshine, laugh like thunder, and eyes bright like the morning star. Here are your people, gives us what you have”.
Joe smiles even bigger whenever the ladies sing. Joe has a beautiful radiant smile that lights up the room, unlike his brother Joel. Joel was hard to get along with and very ambitious. He thought the village couldn’t offer him any future, and he constantly pestered his parents to let him live with his uncle in the city, but they knew Joel was not ready.
The villagers called him moody and made faces whenever they saw him. Joel is always in a hurry and rarely minds his manners. He can’t wait to leave Tujer village forever, so one day he ran away to the city hoping to work for his Uncle Ebal’s business, but with no qualifications, he could only work as a house help.
Joe continued to work at the farm and when the villagers heard what happened many young men helped the family with their farm. When harvest time came, Joe and his family harvested more than the villagers could eat. It happened that there was a new factory nearby that produced tomato paste.
The factory owners heard of the plentiful harvest and decided to sign a contract. The whole village celebrated the good news, and Joe’s family no longer worries about buyers. They even employ laborers to work the farm because of the increased demand. Their lives changed and money is no longer a problem.
But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:4
Waiting on God can be daunting because his ways and timing are quite different from ours. But if we wait patiently on God and don’t grow weary we will reap the harvest. We each have our own race to run and only the grace of God helps us stay in our own lane without comparing or competing with others. Success is not scarce, and kindness to family and others will be returned.
Joe was admired by the villagers because of his character. That’s why they helped when his family needed it. Joel ran away because he thought the grass would be greener without knowing that God can bless you anywhere, anytime.
We live in a world of instant gratification, and anything requiring time and effort is undesirable. Patience is a virtue that we must cherish and work for. Life is a process and waiting is part of life. As Christians, it is important for us to worship the miraculous God who can do anything at any time. We can never hurry him because he is in charge. There will always be a “next thing” to wait for. Waiting has no end, so wait patiently.
